Seabright

The Seabright neighborhood has an interesting historical background.

Welcome to Seabright

The Seabright neighborhood captures a lot of the best of Santa Cruz, largely because it’s so centrally located. While it doesn’t have the beautiful stretch of coastline you’ll find on the Westside, or the numerous shops in Capitola, there’s plenty to enjoy about this quaint section of town between Downtown and Live Oak. Though the neighborhood is small, it has just about everything you need within a short distance. Several bars and restaurants dot the areas on and around Seabright Ave., as well as nearby grocery stores, schools, and health clubs. It’s an easy neighborhood to navigate on foot or by bike and there are plenty of routes to get around town without a car.

There is some traffic congestion on the main streets in the area, but it’s mostly concentrated on Seabright Ave., Soquel Ave., and Murray St. Aside from the main thoroughfares, the neighborhood streets are relatively quiet with little traffic unless you count evening dog walkers. The Seabright neighborhood has an interesting historical background, having been established as Villa de Branciforte in 1797 as a pueblo under the Spanish government. Though it eventually became part of Santa Cruz, the Villa had a town center where Branciforte Elementary School currently sits and North Branciforte Ave. was used as a horse racing track. Attractions

Yacht Harbor

The Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor can be accessed easily from most parts of the Seabright neighborhood. It’s a relaxing and quiet area most times of day and you’ll see plenty of dog walkers, joggers, bicyclists, and people out for a casual stroll. If you take the Arana Gulch Trail toward the harbor, you’ll end up right at the entrance and be able to bike or walk the length of the harbor. During the holidays, the harbor hosts a popular lighted boat parade, which features several small craft, all adorned with lights and decorations, circling the harbor for viewers to enjoy.

Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History

The Museum of Natural History, opened in 1904, sits above Seabright Beach and was the first public museum in Santa Cruz. The museum offers displays, exhibits, lectures, and workshops, all centered around nature, the environment, and ecological awareness. In 1982, the large Gray Whale sculpture was added in front of the entrance and has since become the iconic symbol of the museum. They also have special events for members and offer free admission for First Friday.

Beaches

Seabright State Beach

Seabright State Beach is nestled between the Yacht Harbor and the San Lorenzo River. With soft, sandy beaches, fire rings, and beach volleyball courts it’s no surprise that so many people favor it. Your dog will love it too as this is one of the dog friendly beaches in Santa Cruz.

Recreation

Pacific Edge Climbing Gym

The only climbing gym located in Santa Cruz County is found in the Seabright neighborhood. Pacific Edge Climbing Gym is a premier facility that not only offers an indoor climbing gym but has yoga classes, a weight room, cardio deck and sauna. If you’ve never climbed before it’s not a problem as they offer numerous classes to get you started.

Arana Gulch Trail

The Arana Gulch Trail is a public park with shared routes for pedestrians, bike riders and dog walkers (on-leash only). It encompasses 63 acres of open meadows, pastures, wetlands, hiking trails, and Arana Creek. If you’re unfamiliar to the area, you might not expect a peaceful, open expanse of nature in the middle of a residential area. The trail is a great way to access Frederick St., 7th Avenue, or get to Soquel if you prefer a route without traffic. There’s also a scenic and relaxing route to the yacht harbor from Arana Gulch.
